'Miller & Levine Biology' Wins Three Association of Educational Publishers Awards Finalist Honors

Boston (PRWEB) April 27, 2009 -- "Miller and Levine Biology (http://www.biology.com) ," the new edition of the world's bestselling high school biology program, is a finalist in three categories of the 2009 Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Awards, including the prestigious Golden Lamp Awards. Named for its two internationally renowned scientist-authors, Ken Miller and Joe Levine, the new biology curriculum from Pearson takes a bold approach to science instruction, combining the power of a robust digital learning path with a proven foundation of academic success.

"Miller & Levine Biology" is a Golden Lamp Award finalist in the "Curriculum" category. As the educational publishing industry's equivalent of "Best Picture" for its recognition of overall excellence, the Golden Lamp is awarded to products for their superior use of content, design and fulfillment of their educational mission.

The high school biology program also earned honors in two categories of the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Awards:

* "Miller & Levine Biology's" innovative digital path is a finalist in the award program's new category - "Technology Innovations, Websites"

* The complete program is recognized as a finalist in the "Curriculum, Science, Grades 9-12" category.

The Distinguished Achievement Awards recognize the best educational resources in the categories of Curriculum, Periodicals, Professional Development and Technology Innovations.

"Over the past decade, the science of biology has changed as significantly as the students in our classrooms. Today we study subjects we couldn't have imagined just a short time ago, such as the human genome and how it compares with the genomes of other organisms. And our students are not only more technologically literate, but they have different expectations for learning science - they want direct experience and contact with what they are learning," said co-author Ken Miller. "Our new program was designed to provide the 21st century content and approach that immerses high school students in the experience of learning biology."

Launched in late 2008 and quickly being adopted by hundreds of schools around the country, the new "Miller & Levine Biology" aims to help all students learn the big ideas and science concepts, regardless of their learning style or ability. Customized curriculum packages allow educators to select the learning solution that fits the needs of their individual classrooms. Through Biology.com, the program's compelling digital path, students meet their partners on their adventure into the world of science - a team of young "ecogeek" scientists who have created real-life experiences infusing curriculum topics with new intrigue and relevance for students. Their "Untamed Science" videos offer an ingenious blend of energy, enthusiasm and solid scientific knowledge and biology that engage students as they explore their world. The program's dynamic digital path also offers students and teachers a wealth of resources and engaging activities, including complete online student and teacher editions of the textbooks, editable worksheets, interactive study guides, fun science games and online assessments.

"Ken Miller and Joe Levine are superstars in the world of science education, and teachers around the country are greeting the next generation of their bestselling high school biology program with enthusiasm and praise for the way that it leverages cutting-edge technology combined with contemporary content to engage students," said Lynda Cloud, Pearson's Senior Vice President for Science. "It is an honor to have 'Miller & Levine Biology' recognized by the educational publishing industry for both its digital path and overall comprehensive instructional program designed to meet the diverse needs of today's science classrooms."

The 2009 AEP Awards will be announced at a banquet and gala on June 12 in Washington, D.C.
