Biology Majors Urged to Take a Stand for Science … and Win a $1,000 Scholarship
Boston, MA (PRWEB) October 13, 2008 -- Biology majors who are willing to take a public stand for science are invited to apply for $1,000 scholarships from Benjamin Cummings (www.pearsonhighered.com), an imprint of Pearson (www.pearson.com).
Elected officials who control policy and spending need to understand a wide range of biology-related issues, from science education to research funding, from health care to environmental concerns. The Pearson Benjamin Cummings Biology Prize encourages students to get involved and help educate elected officials by sharing their experiences and insight about important scientific issues.
The scholarship program is open to biology majors who are currently enrolled in a general biology course, or who have successfully completed a general biology course within the past two years. Four scholarships will be awarded.
To apply, students must write a brief letter to an elected official on the local, state or national level that expresses their opinion about a biology-related issue. For example, students might consider writing about environmental protection, energy independence, science education or biomedical research.
Students also must complete an application and secure a recommendation from their biology professor. Application packets must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Additional information, including a downloadable application and tips about writing to an elected official, is available at www.pearsonhighered.com/scholarships/biologyprize.
